Mehsampur (Jalandhar), October 14
At a time, when stubble burning was a burning issue in the state, Mehsampur villagers in Nakodar sub division have emerged as a ‘Paddy straw burning free village’. Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar Varinder Kumar Sharma Saturday felicitated the Panchayat and progressive farmers’ of the village Mehsampur for unanimously taking a path breaking decision to not burn paddy straw. The farmers apprised DC Sharma that they had either ploughed the paddy straw within the soil or they were making the bales of this straw to be supplied to Bio Mass Plant in nearby Beer village.Sharma lauded the efforts of the farmers and said that though paddy straw management was a little expensive task then burning it, but the farmers must adopt the latest techniques through cooperative societies on custom hiring basis or by pooling the resources to address the issue. The DC reiterated that due to paddy straw burning 17 nutrients and several other micro nutrients of soil were destroyed and it produces 70,000 MG particulate matter which has an adverse effect on human health. “I appeal to the farmers that they must replicate the example of this village for making Punjab a clean, green and pollution free state” he added.
