Shahkot(Puneet Pal Singh) – High enthusiasm was seen as voters resisting the scorching heat wave made through to the polling stations as 76.60 percent polling turnout has been recorded in Shahkot by-election and result will be announced on May 31. The polling held between 7 am to 6 pm, yet the election was a necessity after the demise of SAD’s sitting MLA Jathedar Ajit Singh Kohar. 76.60 percent out of 1.72 lakh voters in the constituency has sealed the fate of 12 candidates contesting in by-elections. Prominent candidates among Hardev Singh Laddi Sherowalia of Congress and Naib Singh Kohar of Shiromani Akali Dal had casted their votes in the early morning along with families and Aam Aadmi Party Candidate Ratan Singh Kakar Kalan had casted his vote afternoon. One Control Unit at booth number 216 and 26 voter-verified paper audit trail (VVPAT) machines were replaced due to technical difficulties. Security arrangements for polling were around 4000 personnel including 2000 from civil Police were deployed at 236 polling booths in the constituency. Along with this, six companies of BSF were deployed at 96 vulnerable polling stations. Padam-Shri awardee Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal also showed up at the polling station of village Seechewal to cast his vote. This is to be mentioned that all political parties are eagerly waiting to celebrate their victory as the election can stop the winning chariot of Congress and it can also effect Shiromani Akali Dal as in Lok Sabha elections in the coming year.
