Congress candidate Jabarjung Singh won by 376 votes from Badal village, defeating Akali Dal’s Udayveer Singh
One Akali candidate won the Sarpanch seat in Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh’s native village Mehraj’s panchayat
Amid the allegations of violence and rigging, some results of Panchayat elections held on Sunday are quite noteworthy. An accused in infamous ‘Jamalpur fake encounter case’ Gurjeet Singh ‘Sam’ of Khokran won the Sarpanch elections after contesting from inside Roopnagar Jail. Confirming the development, Gurmeet Singh ‘Peter’, younger brother of Sam, informed that Sam won the polls with
the margin of 97 votes. It is learnt that out of a total of 1,015 polled votes, he secured 545. Parminder
Tiwari, the nearest rival of Sam, was contesting as a Congress party’s candidate, whereas Sam was independent. Notably, earlier Sam’s wife was Sarpanch of the panchayat of two villages, Takhran and Khokhran. “People reposed faith in us as they find the case in which my brother is undertrial a fake one. We fielded Sam in the polls honouring the wish of village residents and finally, they ensured his victory, even when he was sitting in the jail,” said Peter. It is pertinent to mention
that Sam has been facing the murder charges in a case of September 27, 2014, in which he along with some policemen was booked for gunning down two brothers Jatinder Singh and Harinder
Singh in Jamalpur. Meanwhile, in another interesting case, Tajpreet Kaur, mother of dreaded gangster Shera Khubban, won the Sarpanch polls from her village Khubban in Fazilka district.
Speaking to Daily Post, Shera’s father Jernail Singh informed that out of the total 2,654 votes
polled in the village, his wife bagged 1,757 votes and she defeated the nearest rival with 1,180 votes.
On September 6, 2010, the police had shot Shera dead, outside his rented house in the densely populated Kamla Nehru Colony in Bathinda. He was wanted in several cases of murder and
robbery. The operation was led by the then assistant superintendent of police (ASP) Kuldeep Singh
Chahal, now posted as SSP Mohali, who had been following him for hours after secret information that he was moving in his Toyota Fortuner along with a female. Meanwhile, reports suggested that slain MLA Malkit Singh Keetu’s alleged murder Kulwant Singh Laddi’s mother also won the Panchayat polls. Further, a notorious gangster Gagandeep Singh alias “Judge”, who is
considered to be a “sharpshooter” and wanted in over a dozen cases registered across the state, also
won the polls in Ferozepur district. Gagandeep is considered close to notorious gangster Jaipaul, the main accused in the murder of gangster-turned-politician Jaswinder Singh Rocky. Among other interesting results, Congress candidate Jabarjung Singh won by 376 votes from village Badal, defeating Akali Dal’s Udayveer Singh. Notably, former CM Parkash Singh Badal, his son, son-in-law and two grandchildren had also polled for party candidate on Sunday. On the other hand, one
Akali candidate won the Sarpanch seat in Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh’s native village Mehraj’s panchayat. It is pertinent to mention that Mehraj has its Nagar Panchayat but it is always considered as a cluster of small villages located around and of those seven one seat is won by SAD.
