Last time when Punjab Cabinet minister Navjot Sidhu was disallowed to take to the stage at the Moga rally presided over by AICC president Rahul Gandhi, Sidhu was quick to realise that he had been cut to size and he quipped within not time that he had been “shown his place”. This had come at the backdrop of Sidhu’s overbearing flamboyance in defining the Indo-Pak relations making it music to the ears of Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and ringing an uncomfortable discordance back home, more particularly to the discomfiture of chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh who minced no words to fire Pakistan.
Last Monday, as the AICC re-nominated four-time MP Pawan Bansal as its nominee for the Lok Sabha elections, Sidhu was in for a double whammy as his wife, Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu, who had been campaigning in Chandigarh aspiring to get the Lok Sabha ticket was cold-shouldered by the party high command. Not just that the AICC high command also dashed his hopes of contesting from the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat as the party decided to re-nominate Capt Amarinder’s choice and the sitting MP Daljeet Singh Aujla from there. It is not yet clear at whose instance did Dr Navjot Kaur start campaigning in the city, to which she had hardly any connect. But the manner she had swung into action campaigning mainly in the peripheral parts of the city, it was presumed that she had the nod of some senior AICC leaders.
Her abrupt entrance in the city did give former union cabinet minister and four-time MP Pawan Bansal some uncomfortable moments. But the Sidhus had to cut a sorry figure after the AICC resposed trust in tried-and-tested Pawan Bansal. “I would have loved it if they had respected a lady trying to showcase her individual work,” she said flagging also the fact that she left her profession – she was a gynaecologist – to devote herself to politics. “But it is okay. That is how the party works,” Sidhu, the former BJP MLA from Amritsar (East), said after signalling her disappointment with the Congress decision announced Tuesday night.
