Draconian move to shut over 800 schools: Khaira. The Leader of Opposition (LoP) and Aam Aadmi Party MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira on Saturday termed the Congress government’s decision to merge schools with less than 20 students as an extreme retrograde step and blatant violation of Right to Free Education RTE Act 2009, for the underprivileged and poor children.Khaira said that the Punjab government has decided to close 800 Government Primary Schools and merge them with nearby schools, on the plea that these schools are having less than 20 students. He lambasted the Capt Amarinder Singh, and said that instead of providing quality and free education and increasing the number of schools in Punjab, the government has decided to close 800 school. He added that the decision is in gross violation of the RTE Act 2009, wherein a primary school should be situated in a distance less than 1 kilometer. “This retrograde step of the Capt Amarinder Singh’s government also deflates its so called plank of development,” said Khera. He further added that AAP MLA’s will lodge a protest outside the premises of said 800 primary schools, facing the axe of the draconian government.
