From a reliable source, it has been learnt that on the basis of a specific information that a syndicate is involved in import of crackers by mis-declaring the same through ICD, Ludhiana, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence(DRI), Ludhiana, has yesterday seized 800 cartons of fireworks (144000 pieces in total) concealed in an import container lying at ICD, CONCOR, Dhandari Kalan. The fireworks were concealed behind bicycle pump cartons.

The consignment was being imported from China. Import of fireworks is prohibited under the Foreign Trade Policy as the Chinese firework is harmful for our environment and the same is not safe for use. As per the declaration given by the importer to the Customs in respect of the sold container, the goods under the container were 54,000 pieces of bicycle air pumps in 1350 cartons (each carton containing 40 pieces). But on examination by the DRI officers, it was found that the front part of the container was loaded with 550 cartons of bicycle air pumps and each carton was having 30 pieces of the air pumps.

But, the rear side of the container was loaded with the 800 cartons of the fireworks. The business and residential addresses of the importer declared before the Director General of Foreign Trade, Ludhiana for getting the import-export license by the importer have appeared to be bogus. The importer is absconding. Further investigation by the DRI is underway.
