Ludhiana: The Dugri Southern Bypass bridge traffic lights are ready for the installation but PWD Department has not completed its work from last two years due to which its installation is getting delayed by the Municipal Corporation, Ludhiana (MCL) authorities. It is pertinent to mention that the Southern Bypass (along Sidhwan canal) connects Ferozepur Road with NH-1 via Doraha, while rail over bridge (RoB) connects BRS Nagar and Jawaddi.
This project is one of the dream projects of the deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, who had shared the aerial view photographs of this over bridge and other bridges of the southern bypass on his facebook page to show the development as the elections are approaching fast next year in the Punjab.
Sources in MCL revealed that initially, the delay was on the part of the Railways regarding rail under bridge (RuB), but after their clearance the work started but again after some time it came to a halt. Further, sources said that the project came to a standstill from last two years due to financial crunch. Besides, there is a strong believe in certain official circles that the delay is being caused intentionally, so that the project could complete near to assembly elections in Punjab to get political mileage.
The traffic expert, Rahul Verma said that due to delay in the completion of the project, commuters are facing the problem in the movement from past few years. Moreover, from the last two years work has come to the halt. He appealed to the MCL authorities that they should complete this project at earliest possible so that the lights ready should be installed there.
APS Brar, Executive Engineer, Public Works Department (PWD) said that substantial work is complete, but the full project would be completed by December-end this year. He told that canal closure was the main reason for delay of the project.
