Bathinda: Deputy Election Commissioner of India Vijay Dev on Saturday reiterated that Election Commission of India was committed to conduct free and fair election in Punjab scheduled for February 4. Before holding a review meeting here with Divisional Commissioner, Deputy Commissioners, DIGs and SSPs to take stock of election preparedness and arrangements in the region, Dev accompanied by Additional CEO Punjab D Lakra and Additional Director General of Police V K Bhawra, said that the teams of election commission were working round the clock to ensure the proper implementation of Model Code of Conduct in the state.
He said that commission had instructed all the officers to ensure uniform action against the violators of Model Code of Conduct as well as making level playing field for all parties. Describing some areas of Malwa region sensitive in view of elections, Dev said: “The Commission has made enhanced and extensive security arrangements to conduct peaceful elections.”
He said that as many as 225 companies of Para Military Forces had been deployed in previous polls while this time Commission had doubled the number to 500. He said that instructions had also been issued to all officers to ensure unbiased elections as well as uniform actions in case of any violation of Model Code of Conduct. He said that strict measures were being taken for confidence building amongst voters so that maximum participation of people could be ensured in voting.
In a query regarding border areas, Dev said that para military forces besides local police had been deployed and both would work in tandem for peaceful elections. He said that election observers were also being taken daily reports so that needful action could be ensured well in time.
On the issue of any use of drugs and liquor in the state, Dev said that extensive security and checking network were in place across the state and central agencies along with static surveillance teams to keep a close tab on such activities.
