Chandigarh: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Tuesday said the abysmal failure of AAP dharnas in Mandis on Monday due to the complete boycott of the same by the farming community was reflective of the support it enjoyed among the peasantry.
In a statement here, senior SAD leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa said AAP Punjab Convenor Gurpreet Singh Ghuggi had announced with much fanfare that AAP workers would hold dharnas across the state on Monday to show solidarity with farmers. “However since farmers have discovered the real nature of AAP they boycotted the dharnas to teach a lesson to the party for betraying the interests of the community,” he said.
Consequently, leave aside Ghuggi even other senior AAP leaders failed to make their appearance felt in mandis. This has also been reflected in the media with most news reports showing a dozen or so AAP workers indulging in a sham protest for the cameras, he added.
The SAD leader said the failure of the AAP dharnas was also reflective of the manner in which the farming community has got disillusioned with the party. “AAP always promises big but it has always failed to deliver. In case of Punjab, the parry has earlier questioned the free power facility being given to farmers by the SAD- BJP alliance. Arvind Kejriwal has gone on record saying that Punjab does not have surplus water and then appealed to the court to transfer water to Haryana through the SYL canal,” he added.
