Patiala: While Punjab government as well as political parties are involved in making tall claims not to release even one drop of river water to neighbouring Haryana through Satluj Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal, on the flip side, Punjab farmers are adopting a softer stance towards their Haryanvi brethren as they are in favour of construction of the canal for Haryana but want some water for their fields out of it as well.
They also feel cheated by their own government over this jinxed SYL issue because the government had announced returning of all the lands used for the construction of SYL Canal to the real owners.
A number of farmers belonging to Kamalpur falling in the Rajpura Sub-Division of the district while talking to Daily Post on Thursday and showing the copies of their Farads of the agricultural land said that at one side, the state government had announced the transfer of the land used for SYL to its parent owners and claimed to free the said land from government control, but in the real sense, at ground level the situation is totally different as nothing has changed in this direction.
Kuldeep Singh, son of Savinder Singh, who is the Sarpanch of the village, said that in the village 14-15 families are there, whose land has been utilised for the construction of the SYL canal as it was procured by the government, but after the announcement of the state government these families got a relief as they were going to get their agricultural lands
He said that their happiness was dashed soon as they went to get the copies of the Farads from the Revenue Department as during online checking, the lands still belonged to the state government and it’s intaqal also stands in the name of the state government. He said that what is the fun in the announcement and added that the state government just tried to take political mileage out of the announcement as it befooled the poor people by playing politics over the river water and in real sense did nothing for the farming fraternity.
When asked about the issue of the SYL canal and the Supreme Court’s observation about its construction to provide water to neighbouring Haryana, they all said that there was no harm in it as they were living in a country so everything must be equal for all nationals, so SYL must be allowed to be constructed to take river water’s for Haryana as the farming fraternity there must irrigate their fields. But they also put up a condition as well as they demanded water out of it for them also to irrigate their fields.
