Fate of 11 candidates sealed in VVPAT. The fate of 11 candidates of Gurdaspur Parliamentary constituency by-election was sealed in the VVPAT and with four days to go before declaration of the results, the coming days promise to be days full of hope blended with anxiety for the candidates as well as their supporters. The election process was completed peacefully save for some minor incidents of clashes between Congress and SAD-BJP workers.Happy Pahra, a former chairman of SAD and his four supporters were injured with sharp-edged weapons when a group of Congress workers allegedly attacked them in Pahra Booth village, which is the native place of Congress MLA Barindermeet Singh Pahra. AAP candidate Major Gen (retd) Suresh Khajuria also had some scuffle with a Congress polling agent at Pangoli village in Pathankot assembly segment. There were some reports of defects in the VVPAT machines. The VVPAT machine could not start at booth no 152 till 11 am in Qadian assembly constituency and polling staff changed the VVPAT machines thrice at booth no 111 in Pathankot assembly constituency. The main contestants in the by-elections are Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief Sunil Jakhar of Congress, Swaran Salaria of BJP and Major General (retd) Suresh Khajuria of AAP. A total of 56 per cent was reported from all nine segments of Gurdaspur Parliamentary constituency. A survey of the post-poll environment in this border district of Gurdaspur revealed that the election offices and party offices wore a deserted look. Tents were still there but chairs could be seen piled into a corner as most candidates had turned their residences into camps. Meeting party members, training counting agents and congregation of supporters frequently at their residences, there was no time for the candidates to take life easily. In most polling booths, the polling staff was seen sitting idly as there was a complete lack of zeal in the voters as they remained at home till afternoon. However, the electoral spirit was seen in the youth who were seen standing in queues at the polling booths from morning. The general impression of the public is that there was a direct contest between Congress candidate Sunil Jakhar and SAD-BJP candidate Swaran Salaria because AAP could not perform their role in the election campaign as no big leader from the party came to take part in the election campaign except for state leaders Sukhpal Singh Khaira and Bhagwant Mann.
