Ferozepur: The battlefield for Guruhar sahai Assembly constituency is considered to be tough from where the Congress, has been fielding Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi. He had won the elections three times in a row from this constituency. Though the Congress party had not officially declared its candidate, but it is obvious that the ticket will be given to Sodhi for the 4th time consecutively.
After winning the seat for three times in a row, the contest will still be of great interest as Sodhi belongs to the kitchen cabinet of Capt. Amarinder Singh. The PPCC chief.
This time AAP had fielded Malkiat Singh Thind as its candidate. The SAD has given the ticket to Vardev Singh son of late Zora Singh Mann who remained member of Parliament from Ferozepur for three terms.
AAP’s Malkiat Singh Thind is a medical practitioner. The party has taken into consideration the Kamboj vote bank which is 18 per cent.
In this election the future of the SAD’s candidate is also at stake as he is contesting election for the second time. He was defeated in the previous election with a margin of 3249 votes.
It is pertinent to mention here that there are about 270 odd villages apart from Guruharsahai town having the total electorate of about 1.62 lakh. There are about 17 percent votes of the Scheduled Castes. In the SC category Rai Sikhs have good presence. About 18 pc of the electorate belongs to the Backward Classes which includes the Kamboj majority vote. The Hindu voters too have a decisive presence.
In the previous 8 elections Congress won this seat for five times, SAD once, the BJP once and the Janata party also won for a single time.
In the 2012 elections total number of the votes polled was 1,26,808 out of total electorate of 1,41,074 with 169 polling stations. The percentage of the votes polled were 89.74per cent.
In 2012 elections there were 12 candidates in fray. Congress candidate Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi got 62,054 votes in comparison to 58,805 votes polled in favour of SAD candidate Vardev Singh Mann. Sodhi won the seat with a margin of 3,249 votes.
But in the forthcoming election in which AAP is in the fray, all the equations are expected to change. It will be a triangular contest which will affect the margin of defeat and victory.
