Khanna: While the murder of Shiv Sena leader Durga Prasad Gupta in a broad daylight on Saturday put a serious question on the functioning of Khanna police, open firing in air in Gupta’s honour by Shiv Sainiks during his cremation here on Monday further highlighted the police inefficiency.
A heavy police force that had been deployed to prevent any untoward incident during Gupta’s cremation remained a mute spectator to the firing of bullets by Shiv Sainiks at a cremation ground here.
A big number of leaders and workers of Shiv Sena had reached Khanna to pay tributes to the slain leader. Apprehending any untoward incident, a heavy police force had been deployed at the cremation site as a precaution.
A panic spread among the people attending the cremation ceremony when about a dozen of the Shiv Sainiks started firing bullets in air as a salute to the deceased leader. Some of these Sainiks were carrying double barrel guns and some were firing bullets from revolvers.
During this entire incident, the police personnel remained a mute spectator to the firing proceedings. Admitting firing of bullets in air, Rajiv Tandon, chairman, Shiv Sena, Punjab said it was done to homage to the slain leader. Tandon warned that their party would give a Punjab bandh call if Gupta’s killers were not arrested within a week. He said after the cremation ceremony they would took Gupta’s ashes to several places in Punjab.
While SSP Khanna Satinder Singh was not available for comments on the firing incident, Ludhiana range DIG SK Kalia confirming the incident said they were looking into the matter. He said an appropriate action would be taken against those found guilty.
Shiv Sena leader Gupta had been shot dead on Saturday by two unidentified motorcycle-borne persons.
