Former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal turned 90 today. The country’s oldest serving Chief Minister was born on December 8, in Abul Khurana village of Bathinda district. Former CM has invited all residents of his native village for his birthday. He has invited them for lunch and ‘Sukhmani Sahib Path’ at a stadium in the village. While taking the view, a resident of Badal village said that “All villagers are invited for Badal sahib’s birthday celebrations. The stadium at a school run by the Badals is being decked up.” Another villager said, “We used to go to wish him on his birthday at his mansion. But this is for the first time when we all have got invitation cards. Everyone is excited to see the celebrations.” He was hailing from the simple family background, his father’s name is Raghuraj Singh and mother’s name is Sundari Kaur. He had done his graduation from the Farsen Christian College, Lahore. Badal has been Chief Minister five times, 1970-71, 1977-1980, 1997-2002, 2007-2012 and 2012 onwards. He has been in power in Punjab continuously since March 2007. He was briefly a Union minister in 1977 in the Morarji Desai government. He was first elected to the Punjab assembly in 1957 on a Congress party ticket. The family members of Badal are all involved in the government. Besides Sukhbir holding two important assignments in the government and the party, Badal’s daughter-in-law Harsimrat Badal is the Union Minister for Food Processing. His son-in-law Adaish Pratap Singh Kairon is a cabinet minister in the Punjab government while Harsimrat’s younger brother, Bikram Singh Majithia, is also a powerful cabinet minister.
