Sangrur:Immediately after the polling for the state assembly elections, gangsters once again have activated themselves in the state and in an example of this, as many as five gangsters shot to death a member of another gang in broad daylight in Longowal town on Thursday.
Even as the police claimed to have registered a case in this connection against all the five accused persons. Police sources stated that search teams had been dispatched to nab the absconding gangsters.
The incident occurred at around 10:30 am on Thursday, when the five accused carrying weapons cornered one Hardev Singh alias Happy, also known to be a notorious gangster, in the main bazar of Longowal town and without giving him any time, fired at him from close range. Happy died on the spot after being shot four times.
When the incident occurred, Happy was said to be alone and busy in collection of money from his borrowers as he was involved in the business of financing.
According to by-standers, after shooting down Happy, the five gangsters fled from the scene and the matter was brought in the notice of the police by locals later. The police made arrangements to have the body of the slain gangster lifted from the spot and transported to a nearby hospital, where his post-mortem was conducted.
Meanwhile, its also learnt that Happy was lodged in jail and he came out just a few days back, but it was not confirmed from any quarters.
Upon contacting Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Inderbir Singh in this connection, he confirmed the killing of Happy but avoided to name him like a gangster as he said that Happy was a small-time criminal and having enmity with people because of his business of finance and just a few days before polling, a case was also registered against him but that was under Section 323 of IPC.
Talking about the killers, he said that all the five killers have been identified by the police and a case has been registered against them by name. He said that against whom the case has been registered include kingpin Babli, Varinder, Amnaa, Saraaj Khan and Narmi. He said that as all the accused were on run different police parties have been sent to conduct raids at the possible hideouts of these criminals. When asked whether all of them were gangsters, the SSP declined to comment merely stating that all were just small-time criminals.
