Patiala: Once in the limelight in 1982 with the Dharam Yudh Morcha started by Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) from the sleepy village of Kapoori over SYL canal digging now again in 2016, the name of Patiala touched the heights, courtesy the controversial canal.
First it’s the Satluj-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal on which the tempers have gone up in Punjab after SC delivered its order over the issue in favour of Haryana and the political parties have lined up to take the mileage out of it.
AAP has announced to start an indefinite protest dharna-cum-demonstration from Kapoori village, situated in Ghanour assembly segment of this district of the state, as the work over SYL started from this village.
The next controversial canal this district is 109-km-long Hansi-Butana canal as it was constructed by the-then Chief Minister of Haryana Bhupinder Singh Hooda in 2006. As per the plan, he wanted to take water from Bhakra Main lINE (BML) canal passing near Samana taking water for Rajasthan and take it to Hansi district to irrigate the area. A sum of Rs 300 crore was also spent over it.
The canal was constructed by Haryana in its area falling in Kaithal district and its last village Azimgarh was selected to set up regulator. Everything was going on smoothly and nobody came to know about it, but it was noticed by Punjab when Haryana was about to cut the BML Canal to get the water and the move was resisted and stopped.
Punjab, at that time, while restraining Haryana asked it to get clearance from the Central Water Commission if they wanted to take the water and since then, the case of Hansi-Butana canal was pending before the Central Water Commission and left Punjab and Haryana again waiting for the order from the commission for this canal as well.
Now, with the SYL issue sparking a row, the ghost of Hansi-Butana canal also started looming large over Punjab from Haryana side as Haryana is trying to take advantage of this situation when Punjab seems to be in a dilemma over the issue.
