Jalandhar:A student of Lovely Professional University (LPU) has brought to the fore the goof up of Distance Education examination system through Right to Information (RTI) Act, hence highlighting that how he was declared ‘fail’ in General Punjabi and ‘passed’ within one night.
Baljinder Singh Sandhu, a student of Bachelor of Arts (BA)-III year was declared fail in General Punjabi, a subject in which he was well versed.
Initially, he has got mere 13 marks out of 80 and declared fail in the subject. However, after receiving the RTI, the distance education authorities sent him rechecked copy, where he had got 50 marks out of 80.
The Distance Education department declared the result in the first week of February in which he got a compartment in General Punjabi. Baljinder pursued BA through Distance Education LPU Regional, Malout.
Shocked at seeing the result, Baljinder not only approached LPU Registrar through RTI and sought a copy of his answer sheet but also brought to the fore the mismanagement in running distance education mode of the varsity. He also shared his experience on his Facebook page.
Talking to Daily Post, Baljinder said that his exams were held in December last year while the result was declared in February. “It was a humiliating to see that I had got mere 13 marks out of 80 in General Punjabi whereas I am so well versed in my mother tongue. My exam went very well and I was rather expecting around 50 marks out of 80 but the result forced me to probe the case”, he said.
Baljinder said that after noticing the poor result, he filed an RTI to Registrar LPU which was turned down by the authorities. “In a written reply, I was informed that I need to send a postal order in the name of LPU. Later, I filed the RTI again and got my answer sheet on April 9 ie Sunday”, he added.
The student said that he was surprised to notice that the distance education authorities declared him passed in General Punjabi. “The answer sheet that I received through RTI was rechecked and my number was increased to 50! Even my CGPA in General Punjabi was updated online within a night from 5.6 to 6, hence declaring me pass in BA-III”, he mentioned.
Baljinder said that he noticed that almost every distance education has got a re-appear in one or the other subject. “The LPU Distance Education department was charging Rs 600 per subject of re-appear. This clearly shows that how many innocent students studying through distance education were being fleeced by the varsity in the name of quality education”, he said.
The student said that he had vowed to get this humiliation probed; as he knew it without doubt that he could never fail in General Punjabi.
Meanwhile, Manish Gupta, the Director Distance Education LPU was not available for comments. Director Corporate Relations, Aman Mittal said. “I am not aware of the case. I would like to comment only after checking entire information.”
