Gurdaspur will be remembered as Chikmagalur for Congress: Mohindra. Hailing the victory of Congress in Gurdaspur by-election, Health and Family Welfare Minister Brahm Mohindra on Sunday envisioned Gurdaspur would be remembered as modern day Chikmagalur in the Indian political history, as the victory has set the stage for the comeback of Congress in 2019 general elections.Interacting with the media persons on the sidelines of a function organised in the memory of Lala Jagat Narain, the founder of Hind Samachar Newspaper group here on Sunday, Mohindra recalled that Congress had lost heavily from Kashmir to Kanyakumari in 1977. “Even the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had also lost from her seat. But after a year, Indira Gandhi contested the Chikmagalur constituency by-poll and had won with a thumping majority, which has set the stage for the comeback of Congress in 1980,” he said.Mohindra said that the history would repeat itself and Gurdaspur would also prove to be modern day Chikmagalur. The Minister said that the Sunil Jakhar’s massive victory was a referendum for development oriented policies of Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh. “This victory has also proved that people have a strong disliking for the regressive, divisive and communal policies of the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre. Voters have rejected the policies of Modi government which have ruined them economically and socially,” he said.To a query that the Punjab government has done away with the policy of recruitment of doctors on initial pay scale, the minister said that the new policy for recruitment of doctors would be introduced very soon. He said that the state government was in the process to ensure online supervision of the availability of medicines in all the government hospitals of the state. Mohindra also said that Trauma Centres would also be set up along with the highways. Earlier addressing the gathering during the function, the minister recalled the immense contribution of Lala Jagat Narayan in the freedom movement of the country.
