Gurdaspur: The district headquarters plunged into the darkness on Monday as Punjab State Power Corporation disconnected the electricity supply to streetlights maintained by Muncipal Council. Gurdaspur MC had failed to deposit power bill amounting to the tune of Rs 10.69 crore.
The Powercom also disconnected electricity connection of Tehsil complex which owes Rs 3 lakh in the form of bill.
Powercom, Executive Engineer, Arvinderpal Singh said that power connection to the streetlights of Improvement trust had been disconnected three days ago as the Improvement Trust failed to deposit Rs 5 lakh.
The power supplies in Fish Park and Saheedi Park were also disconnected. Sources maintained that Municipal Council owes an amount of Rs 10.69 crore, Water Supply Department Rs 4.31 lakh , Improvement Trust Rs 5 lakh, Irrigation Department Rs 5.75 lakh, Tehsil complex Rs 3.20 lakh, Zila Parishad Rs 6.76 lakh to Powercom.
Aramjit Singh Wahla, SDO Improvement Trust alleged that the electricity bill was due on March 6 but the Powercom disconnected the electricity supply before due date.
When contacted SDO, Punjab Water Supply and Sewerage Board said that department has not sufficient funds to pay electricity bill and his office sends the demand of electricity bills to headquarters every month.
