Faridkot: Tension reached its peak in the region as Dera Sacha Sauda followers brought the body of Gurdev Singh Insaan from Ludhiana and placed it in the sect’s Naam Charcha Ghar at Kotkapura town of Faridkot district. The fuming dera followers declared that the body would not be cremated until the police nab the accused who shot at Gurdev on Monday morning when he was opening his shop at Burj Jawahar Singh Wala village in the district. Gurdev, 31, was rushed to the DMCH Ludhiana on Monday, where doctors put him on ventilator and after four days he was declared dead.
Earlier on Friday morning, the dera followers and kin of the deceased had refused to take the body from the hospital in Ludhiana, stating that they would do so only after the police arrested the assailants. However, after efforts of the administration, they agreed to get the post mortem conducted, following which they brought the body to Kotkapura. The dera followers, rejecting the repeated requests of the district administration, announced that they would not consign it to flames unless the accused were arrested. Meanwhile, hundreds of dera followers assembled at Naam Charcha Ghar of the sect at Kotkapura to pay respect to the deceased and also to participate in the agitation against the administration.
Claiming to have lost faith in the police, the agitating dera followers alleged that Faridkot SSP SS Mann was not sensitive to the situation. They also expressed annoyance against him, stating that he was telling them that Gurdev sustained one bullet injury that went through his skull, but the post-mortem report disclosed that he received two bullet injuries, one still stuck inside. Deputy Commissioner M S Jaggi, who visited Gurdev’s place to convey his condolences, also failed to convince the dera followers as they were quite perturbed over the happening.
Speaking to mediapersons, the dera followers declared that the protest would be intensified on Saturday. Some of them also stated that they were planning to place the body on the road and block the Bathinda-Faridkot-Muktsar-Moga junction in the city. They claimed that the movement of the Swift car in which the assailants had come and fled was captured on CCTV cameras while moving around in the district at different locations for two hours after the crime. Terming it a serious lapse on the part of the police, the dera followers claimed to have smelt a deep conspiracy behind the attack, stating that he was called by the CBI thrice during the investigation into the sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib that had taken place last year just next to his shop.
Ferozepur range DIG Ranbir Singh Khatra was busy holding parleys with the dera followers till late in the evening on Friday. According to information, the three assailants came in a Maruti Swift car bearing no number plates. They asked Gurdev for soft drinks but the moment he turned around to fetch the bottles, one of them shot him in the head and they all fled. It is pertinent to mention that Malwa has witnessed various disturbing instances in the past nine years after the dera-Sikh controversy took place in Punjab in 2007. Many persons from both sides have also lost lives in the violent incidents.
