Bathinda: A team of about three dozen cops from Sonipat district of Haryana on Thursday shot one gangster dead and arrested four of his accomplices at Jaga Ram Tirath village in Bathinda district. Police from the neighbouring state informed that the gangster, identified as Ajay alias Kannu, was a proclaimed offender (PO) on whom the state had announced a cash reward of Rs 5 lakh being allegedly involved in various killings, murder bids, loot and extortion instances. Those arrested have been identified as Deepak, Rakesh and Mohit, belonging to Haryana.
The fourth one is a ‘Baba’ Bhola Singh in whose hut the accused were staying, when the encounter took place. It has been learnt that the Baba had been staying in the village for past two years and he too was facing some criminal cases. Police have reportedly recovered two .315 bore rifles, one .12 bore rifle, one revolver of .32 bore, two 9 mm pistols and live bullets from his possession.
According to information, police were tracking the gangsters for past several days and finally on Wednesday the operational team traced his phone call made to Baba in question. The cops then called up ‘Baba’ as a client and asked for some astrological opinion to which he gave them his exact location. Head of the Haryana Police team DSP Rahul Dev said that the gangster Ajay ‘Kannu’ had recently lost the panchayat polls at Karvedi village in Sonipat with a gap of 45 votes.
Unable to accept the defeat, the accused decided to kill 45 residents of his village. Going by his fanatic mind, a few days back he fired at two persons in the village of whom one succumbed to injuries and another is still critical. He then killed a man and his son. One of them was in the Army and another in Navy, said the DSP.
