Kapurthala – Huge hoardings have come up NH-703-A on the outskirts of the city in violation of the High Court and the Supreme Court rulings, banning hoardings and billboards along the national and state highways. Huge hoardings and banners have been put up near Atma Singh PUDA Colony on the Jalandhar Makhu National Highways even street light poles standing on dividers on this highway can be found loaded with flex boards. Mocking the court orders, Kapurthala municipal council even allocated the unipoll sites to advertisement contractor Global Automotive situated on the national highway NH-703.Besides this big sized hoardings even blocked the footpaths on coolroads hindring the way of pedestrians. Though this is not a new trend, defacement of public and private property across the city seems to have become a regular practice with political leaders. The Kapurthala municipal council and the district administration have turned a blind eye towards the menace. The Supreme Court in 1997 and the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 1998 had passed orders to remove hoardings and advertisements along the national highways, which were considered dangerous and an impediment to the safe movement of the traffic. However, in spite of the court orders, the situation remains the same.
