Fuel mafia has been causing revenue losses to the tune of Rs 2,200 crore, annually to Punjab. There has been home delivery of diesel and petrol by sourcing them from other neighbouring states at cheaper rates. But all this is happening with the collusion of Excise and Taxation officers. Disclosing details, Petrol Pump Dealer Association alleged that in the last 17 years, the mafia has caused a loss of Rs 40,000 crore to the state exchequer. Many representations have been submitted to the state government, but it has turned deaf ear. To open the eyes of the government, the association has decided to organise ‘Satyagrah’ in Mohali from Tuesday. Presenting facts before the media in Chandigarh Press Club, president Parmjit Singh Doaba and spokesman of the association GS Chawla said that there has been recorded growth in the sale of vehicles after 2000. But since 2000, there has been recorded fall in the sale of petrol and diesel from 10 per cent to 2 percent. According to the report of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, the sale of two-wheeler vehicles in Punjab is 20 percent more than the neighbouring state of Haryana and others. According to the facts for the past seven years, the consumption of petrol in Punjab has come down from 68 per cent to 48 per cent. The main reason for this is the steady increase in VAT in Punjab. If the rate of VAT in Punjab was at 25 per cent like other states, although there may be loss of 12.54 percent in present tax collection, this will increase the sale of diesel and petrol by 100 per cent and the current income will be increased by another Rs two crore, daily. Moreover, this fact is in the study of Petroleum and Analysis Cell. According to the leaders, even in 2015, when the government was inclined to implement this system, but the mafia somehow influenced the decision and the rate of petrol was notable to go down. Due to this, more than 1,700 petrol pumps, out of 3,400, have been re-sold and the others are facing hard times. That is why pump owners have taken the decision to launch Satyagraha.
