Anandpur Sahib: The district administration took a tough stand against the illegal mining and gave a clear signal that illegal mining will never be tolerated. Deputy Commissioner Rupnagar Karnesh Sharma conducted a surprise check on the banks of the Sutlej to take stock of the situation. Recently, it was reported by the Daily Post that illegal mining is posing threat to the bridge constructed on river Sutlej and the pillars on which the structure of the bridge rests have been exposed up to several feet. Deputy Commissioner, Rupnagar, Karnesh Sharma along with SSP Rupnagar and other officials of mining department reached near river Sutlej to take the first hand information.
While talking to the media DC Karnesh Shama said that, there is no threat to the structure of the bridge so far. He apprised that the depth of the pillars on which the bridge is constructed is 28 metres and only 4 metres have been exposed due to the mining. He also admitted that mining is strictly prohibited within 500 metre upstream and downstream near the bridge. He said that the administration is making a plan to install a wall made of iron wire near the bridge so that no one can reach near the bridge for mining. All the stone crushers situated on the banks of the river Sutlej were already shut down before the arrival of Deputy Commissioner.
When asked the reason for the same, Deputy Commissioner expressed his contentment and said that people involved in mining have fear in their hearts that is why they closed their crushers before the arrival of the officials. Deputy Commissioner Karnesh Sharma also gave orders to demolish the temporary approaching roads leading to the river that helps the mining mafia to dig up small minerals. A JCB was on work and it demolished two such roads within few minutes. Deputy Commissioner also ensured that the police patrolling would also be increased to keep a check on the illegal mining. He added that legally the quarries can be dug up only up to 10 feet.
