THE DISTRICT IS SELECTED FROM PUNJAB FOR ITS EFFORTS TO IMPLEMENT THE MISSION SUCCESSFULLY
For successfully implementing the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin), Sangrur district, the only district from Punjab, has been included in super 60 districts of the country. Dis – closing this, here on Tuesday, Deputy Commissioner Ghanshyam Thori said that it was a proud moment for the district as Sangrur is the only district in Punjab which has been included in the super 60 districts of India. Thori said that the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation had chosen 60 districts in the country that had contributed a lot to make the Swachh Bharat Mission, a success. The Sangrur district grabbed the space among top 60 districts by implementing the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) with utmost dedication, he added. “The sanitation teams of the district carried out special awareness programmes in the rural areas and encouraged the rural folk to avoid open defecation.
The village panchayats too played a vital role by motivating the villagers to construct toilets at their homes so that they could shun the practice of open defecation,” the deputy commissioner added. Thori said that the villages of Sangrur district had already been declared open defecation free from 2017. Under this, out of Rs 29 crore grant, given by the World Bank, a sum of Rs 23 crore had already been issued to build toilets in the houses of 15, 334 beneficiaries. The deputy Commissioner further said that under the initiative of Swachh Sundar Shauchalaya, 6,085 toilets built under this project had also been given a new look with colourful paintings, adding that to complete the pending work, concerned departments had been given required directions. Notably, this mission is in the last leg as 98 per cent villages of the country have already been covered under it
