Jalandhar, September 20:-A delegation of Independent Poultry Association on Wednesday met with Jalandhar North MLA Bawa Henry and demanded the implementation of Contract Farming Act 2013 as promised by congress in its election manifesto. The delegation handed over a memorandum to Henry, in which they requested congress government to save the broiler farmers of Punjab from pseudo contract farming companies. They said that such companies were producing broilers with the help of some farmers and selling chicks directly ie through their franchises to most of the other farmers producing their own broilers independently.Sanjay Sharma president of association said that a company having a very dominant position in chick production is managing excessively high chick prices for farmers. “Abusing their dominant position, the companies were leaving farmers with no other choice but to buy chicks from them or their franchises at the rate of Rs 40 to Rs 50 per chick, which is almost thrice its cost of production”, he said.Sharma said that contrary to this, they were selling their ready broiler chicken produced through contract farming, at much lower prices in the market. The association members said that the farmers were witnessing heavy losses amounting to crores and were compelled to close their farms due to rising debt. “Congress has included Contract Farming Act 2013 in its Election Manifesto 2017 – 2022. The Poultry Farmers gave their full support to congress in the assembly elections and now we demand that the government should implement the act to save us”, they said.
