Ludhiana central jail’s staff officials were on tenterhooks after finding notorious drug peddler Sunny Aulakha alias Sunny Doda, a high profile inmate active on his Facebook page in the wee hours of Friday. Doda’s profile picture and a new status was uploaded on the social site at 1.17 am, even though he was lodged in the barrack.
Already facing scrutiny for the use of mobile phones inside the jail, the top officials lost no time in ordering a probe. A day later, cops have found out that it was Doda’s brother, who updated his status and the profile pictures, after accessing his Facebook.Having hit a dead end while probing similar cases in the past, top officials are still struggling to come out with the convincing answers as to why Doda’s brother would use his FB in the wee hours.Firstly, his old pictures were uploaded on Doda’s page with a message ‘Miss you All’ on June 28 at 1.17am.Later more pictures were uploaded with message ‘Miss me’ at 2.06am. Then again at 2.28am on June 29, another status ‘Soon I come back. Miss you all. Love you’, was uploaded.
Jail Superintendent, SP Khanna says in the initial probe it has come out that Doda’s brother has been accessing his facebook profile.“Our team has searched the drug peddler but nothing has been recovered from him. Preliminary inquiry reveals that Sunny Doda’s brother has been accessing his facebook profile and he must have uploaded his pictures on it,” he said.
However he added that it was yet to be ascertained if the pictures uploaded in the last few days were clicked inside the barrack. Jail officials however are unable to explain as to why Doda’s brother would update his facebook profile with such messages. In fact this is not the first time when the role of jail officials has come under scrutiny over the use of mobile phones and uploading of pictures on the social sites involving inmates.
Recently, some inmates had uploaded a video on Facebook in which inmates were seen thrashing another inmate inside the jail, on Facebook. In a similar instance, an inmate had uploaded his selfie with another inmates on his Facebook profile from inside the jail. Soon after this incident, the jail authorities had also recovered two mobiles phones from the inmates.
But they had failed to recover any smartphone through which Facebook could be operated. On May 10, two murder convicts Gurpreet Singh and Raghuwinder Singh and one murder under trial Goverdhan, were booked by police after Gurpreet uploaded their selfies on his Facebook profile. In this case too, cops could not recover any mobile from him.Following this, on May 12 the officials have seized a mobile phone from another inmate Balwinder Singh. On June 2, the police had found 16 mobiles phones from inside the barracks.
Later on June 26, the jail officials had seized five mobile phones and SIM cards from inmates.
Inspector general (Jails) R K Arora who was contacted after Friday’s incident had said, “Mobile phones are reaching inmates. It is worse that drug peddlers are accessing social media. I would immediately get it inquired.”
