Chandigarh: Nabha jail break case is an outcome of total collapse of administrative system because of political interference, shortage of trained staff and withdrawal of three-tire cover of high security Jail in Nabha, claimed former Director General of Police (DGP), Prisons, Punjab, Shashi Kant.
Shashi Kant, while talking to Daily Post, termed the incident a complete failure of government and administration due to the interference of politicians in functioning of jail officials in gross violation of Jail Manual. “Breach in the high security jail, was not possible without the connivance of jail staffers or officials”, he claimed.
“Political interference in jails is so much that every political leader wants his own men in the jails management staff, security staff and all facilities to his ‘men’ lodged in prisons,” alleged former DGP.
Moreover, shortage of staff in Punjab jails, absence of training to jail staff in handling the dreaded criminals and scraping of three-tire security cover in the jails are some of the other major reasons, claimed Kant.
Kant, during his tenure raised the issue of ‘drugs menace in Punjab jails’ strongly and had to face Punjab government’s wrath, claimed that jails in Punjab are guarded by Own Rank and Pay (ORP) employees.
He claimed that the three-tire security system, introduced couple of years ago under the jail reforms, in Punjab jails has been withdrawn by government due to shortage of staff.
Form DGP also said that easy access to internet inside jails also help prisoners to be in link with their aides and hatched strategies to operate criminal activities. “Notorious criminals are even operating through facebook and other social sites on internet”, he claimed.
Kant claimed that inter-jail transfers of inmates on holidays and Sundays should be avoided, as criminals have been attempting to escape especially on these days.
