Jalandhar : A day after Congress high command appointed senior leader Kamal Nath as incharge of Punjab Affairs, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leadership flooded Jalandhar city with huge billboards attacking congress for hurting the sentiments of the Sikhs. The billboards titled ‘Gandhi Parivar, Punjab te Vaar’ with the tagline ‘Punjab Tuhanu Maaf nahi Karega ‘hogged limelight, as these were put up amidst the hoardings of congress vice president Rahul Gandhi in the city.
In the billboards, the SAD categorically blamed the congress leaders for the 1984 riots and attack on Sri Harmandir Sahib, SYL issue, when the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had laid its foundation stone, the pogrom of 1984 and mass killings of Sikhs in northern India states, during emergency period, Indira Gandhi forcibly gave water from Punjab to Haryana and snatching of Chandigarh from Punjab.
While the SAD’s move of putting up billboards against congress after the appointment of Kamal Nath on the top slot came on expected lines, a section of congress leaders were also unhappy with this development. The congress high command on Sunday replaced Shakeel Ahmed with Kamal Nath for Punjab and Haryana.Sources maintained that the close confidantes of Punjab Congress chief Capt Amarinder Singh were also apprehensive with Kamal Nath’s appointment. “This move has given enough fuel to both the SAD-BJP and the AAP against us, which was wrong. The party could have thought about some other names, as such a move around six months ahead of the assembly elections can cost the party dear”, said a senior party leader.“We have conveyed our sentiments to the state party leadership and hope that the congress high command would take the necessary step soon”, said a group of leaders from Doaba.
However contrary to this, Rajya Sabha MP Shamsher Singh Dullo said that the appointment of Kamal Nath would strengthen the party, Even All India Youth Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring also played safe and said that the appointment of Kamal Nath as Punjab Affairs incharge was a decision taken by the party high command and they knew it better. However, the SAD and the AAP leadership was quick to blame the congress for the 1984 riots and attack its leadership for playing with the sentiments of the Sikh community.
Congress should tender apology to people: BJP
Chandigarh: Former president of BJP, Punjab unit, Kamal Sharma, on Monday, strongly condemned appointment of 1984 anti-Sikh riot accused Kamal Nath as incharge of Punjab Congress. Sharma demanded immediate cancellation of appointment besides Congress tendering an apology to the people of Punjab. Sharma said, “The appointment of a person like Kamal Nath, who is accused of rioting, only reflects that Congress has no regrets over Sikh genocide that took place in 1984.”
Expressing his dismay over the development, Sharma said that it was extremely unfortunate that instead of bringing the guilty to book, Congress party is rewarding them with plum posts. “Leaving all issues aside, AICC Vice-President, Rahul Gandhi should clarify that how can a riot accused be state incharge of Congress party.” Sharma stated.DP
