Kapurthala, July 24(Kusum Arora) In a major fillip, Punjab Minister for Power and Irrigation, Rana Gurjit Singh on Monday announced a complete facelift of Kanjli Wetland as an ideal tourist destination, a project which has turned out to be a picture of utter neglect in the past decade. Rana Gurjit said that the entire work of cleaning the holy Kali Bein and rejuvenating the Kanjli Wetland tourist spot would be completed within coming six months. “Kanjli would be developed as an ideal tourist destination”, he said. A Rs 2 crore project, Kanjli Wetland was being run byPunjab Tourism Development Board (PTDC), Chandigarh. The PTDC has launched the project on Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode. Bird watchers and nature lovers prefer keep visiting the tourist spot. An estimated 92 species of birds, amphibians and fishes were available at the wetland for the nature lovers to enjoy the ambience.Addressing the gathering during his visit to the tourist spot, Rana said that nearly three kilometres long pathway along with the holy Kali Bein from Gau Ghat to Kanjli wetland would be beautifully constructed. “Elaborate security arrangements would be made by installing CCTV cameras, spiral barbed wires and deployment of police force, so that people coming for walk especially the women could walk freely without any fear in morning and evening”, he said.The cabinet minister also said that the entire pathway would be lined with trees and flowers to give it a natural look. Rana also said that five acre of forest land along with Kali Bein would also be developed as a botanical garden to provide the best natural and wetland location to people. Dwelling on another point, Rana Gurjit announced that a conveyor belt would be installed at barrage in Kanjli to weed out water hyacinth and other plants in Kali Bein. He said that the river water in Kali Bein would be cleaned to rejuvenate this water source of immense religious importance.“Two new bridges would also be constructed over Kali Bein to provide a good view of the beautiful natural surroundings of the Kanjli Wetland”, he added. The minister said that a proper mechanism would be evolved for ensuring regular cleaning of the Kali Bein by introducing new equipments. Rana Gurjit also announced to explore the feasibility of introducing water sports and construction of cycling track in the later stage. He also formed a committee of eminent personalities of the city to monitor the work on this project.It is pertinent to mention here that Kanjli Wetland project was launched to develop the site as an ideal tourist destination during the previous congress government in the state from 2002-2007. However, the project was neglected by the SAD-BJP alliance government in the state for ten years.
