Kapurthala: Civil hospital of the town is the only hospital in the country where various de-addiction services are available under one roof. The hospital was as conferred with the national award by President Pranab Mukherjee last year. As many as 30-bedded Navjeevan Kendra, Drug Treatment Clinic, Opioid Substitution Therapy (OST) are being run on the premises of the civil hospital. It is learnt that very soon Nav-Kiran Kendra Drug De-addiction Centre for Women will start functioning as the government has already given its nod to start it.
Giving details about the de-addiction centres, Psychatrist Sandeep Bhola said that during 2007, 30 bedded Navjeev Kendra was started with the unique initiative of District Administration and Health Department and Indian Red Cross Society. He said that since then nearly 12,000 drug addicts gained the facilities of OPD and more than 1,600 get the IPD facility.
He further told that during 2012 Drug Treatment Clinic (DTC) , was started and then five such type of clinic were introduced in the country and Kapurthala was become the first city in the country to start the same he added. He also said this project was sponsored by the UNODC till October, 2014 and afterward that has been taken over by the Union government.
He further revealed that through this treatment centre drug addicts are being cured through Methadone Maintenance Treatment from their chronic relapses illness and helping them to regain their social lives. Bhola said that during last five years nearly 250 drug addicts from Kapurthala and surrounding areas have been registered and nearly 100 patients has completed their course and now leading their normal life, of which 12 got married, 38 drug addicts re-started their jobs to win bread and butter for their families, 5 resumed their studies and three got arranged re-marriage.
Dr Bhola said that Opioid Substitution Therapy (OST) was established on the premises of civil hospital, Kapurthala during 2015 and this programme has been running with the sponsorship of the National Aids Control Organisation (NACO) through Punjab State AIDS Control Society (PASCO).
Punjab government is committed to eradicate drug menace and make it a drug-free state to fulfil CM Captain’s dream, said DR Bhola adding that with breaking of drug chain this civil hospital is likely to play a vital role to cure addicts.
