Kapurthala: Lok Adalat summons MCs, seeks reply on cleanliness
Kapurthala – In a first, taking cognizance of steep rise in dengue cases and deaths in Kapurthala, the chairman Permanent Lok Adalat (Public Utility Services) has summoned all the 27 Municipal Councilors (MCs), asking them to furnish information of what have they done to ensure cleanliness in the district. The Permanent Lok Adalat sent letters to all the 27 MCs and directed them to appear in person before the court on Wednesday.In the complaint, the members of Human Rights Press Club Kapurthala on September 27 had blamed the Punjab Minister for Health Brahm Mohindra and Local Bodies Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu in failing to address the problem of dengue in the district. A case in this regard titled as ‘Human Rights Press Club versus Health Minister Punjab and others’ was listed in the Lok Adalat for taking appropriate steps in the control of spread of dengue disease in Kapurthala. Earlier, the summons were also issued to Secretaries of both the health and local bodies department, civil surgeon Kapurthala and Executive Officer MC Kapurthala following which they were all directed to appear before court in person on October 4.The petition was filed by Human Rights Press Club Kapurthala. President of the club Suket Gupta had stated that due to rise in dengue cases, the ministers were summoned and now the MCs have been asked to appear before the Lok Adalat on Wednesday. The Human Rights Press Club had stated that dengue and chikungunya cases were on the rise in Kapurthala district due to poor upkeep of the city by the civic authorities. The court took notice of the lapse on the part of Health Minister and the Local Bodies Minister, hence the summons. In the order of the summons, all the respondents were asked to appear in person on fixed date as the matter was of urgent nature and needs to be settled for controlling the disease. Gupta said that over 300 cases of dengue were detected in Kapurthala district in past two months. Around three to four persons also died because of dengue symptoms, he had said.
