Jalandhar: Leading the ambitious ‘Namami Gange’ Project of Modi government, renowned environmentalist Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal was honoured by various Non Government Organisations (NGOs) at Kashi Hindu, Benaras.
Academicians from the varsity, NGO representatives and renowned personalities thanked Baba Seechewal for leading the Clean Ganga project launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The representatives said that it was matter of pride that the project was led by Punjab in the country.
Notably, Varanasi was the parliamentary seat of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who initiated the Namami Gange project soon after coming to power.
Honouring Baba Seechewal, the representatives from Varanasi, Kachwa and Allahabad shared that though the Centre government studied various river water cleaning projects in liaison with the foreign nations but it was ‘Seecheewal Model’, which gave foundation to the Namami Gange project. “The successful model of cleaning the pious Kali Bein rivulet in Punjab was a role model for the entire country. Now, the Centre government has given would be implementing the same model for cleaning river ganga”, they said, adding that voluntary service of people in cleaning Kali Bein was an example of sorts.
Addressing the gathering, Baba Seechewal emphasized on making it a peopl’e campaign to clean river ganga. He said that rivers and drains could never get polluted provided those at the helm of affairs consider it as their responsibility to save natural water resources. “The toxic and polluted water of Sultanpur Lodhi and Seechewal was being cleaned and used for agriculture purposes. We will have to join hands to save and clean river Ganga on the same lines”, he said.
Baba Seechewal rather said that cleaning of polluted rivers was a store house of revenue for the states. “Not only it would save revenue by cleaning the polluted rivers through economic seechewal model but it would also provide ready to use water for agriculture “, he added.
Former DGP of Uttar Pradesh RN Singh who led a delegation of village sarpanches and panches at Mirzpur district urged Baba Seechewal to personally lead this campaign in the historic city of Benaras. Meanwhile, those present on this occasion from Kashi Hindu University included professor Kavita Shah, Chandrma and Ramesh were present besides different NGOs.
