Chandigarh: With his decision to put off his proposed Punjab visit, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal has sent out a clear and unequivocal message that he is not supporting the state on the SYL issue, Punjab Congress president Captain Amarinder Singh said on Sunday.
Even as he continues to remain strangely silent on the Supreme Court verdict on SYL, Kejriwal has, expectedly, chosen to keep away from the state that is facing an imminent water crisis in the aftermath of the apex court’s verdict on the critical issue, which has huge ramifications for Punjab, said Captain Amarinder, adding that the AAP leader’s behaviour is totally in keeping with his habit of running away from problems.
In a statement issued here, Captain Amarinder pointed out that 72 hours after the judgement came in, and despite widespread criticism of his lack of comment on the matter, Kejriwal has maintained a deafening silence on SYL. This has unmasked his double standards on the vital SYL issue, on which he has been doing a flip flop for the past several weeks in what can only be considered his desperate bid to save his government in Delhi and keep the people of his birthplace in Haryana happy, said the Punjab Congress chief.
But in the process, Kejriwal has lost his own face (apart from his voice), causing him to keep out of Punjab, said the Punjab Congress leader, adding that the writing is on the wall for Kejriwal and his party. Releasing his lists of candidates is not going to help him win the forthcoming Assembly elections, said Captain Amarinder.
Kejriwal, who was slated to release his party’s Dalit manifesto for the Punjab Assembly elections during his visit, has suddenly disappeared from the scene, leaving his own party workers in the lurch, the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president pointed out, adding that the AAP leader had exposed his vested interests completely, even to his own party workers.
For a person who has always loved taking a stand on every issue, and who did not waste a minute reacting to the Modi government’s demonetisation move, this persistent silence on SYL is completely inexplicable, according to Captain Amarinder.
The PPCC chief once again demanded from Kejriwal a clear and categorical statement on his stand on the SYL issue, saying the people of the state want to know from you “whether or not you are with Punjab on this matter or are your loyalties with the people of Delhi and Haryana?”
On the one hand, said Captain Amarinder, the AAP leader had his set his sights on taking over Punjab’s reigns and on the other, he continued to show, by his acts of commission and omission, that he was not really concerned about the interests of the state. It is clear that all Kejriwal is interested in is promoting his own selfish interests, said the PPCC chief.
