Punjab Congress on Monday took a jibe at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) spokesperson Sukhpal Singh Khaira, saying he has set Olympics record in fence-sitting.“If the fence-sitting was an event in Olympics, India would be assured of one gold medal at least with someone like you (Khaira), who has mastered the art (of fence-sitting), representing the country,” the party leaders taunted.
In a joint statement, senior Congress leaders and legislators including Rana Gurjeet Singh, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Navtej Singh Cheema and Ramanjit Singh Sikki said that recently Khaira had added another record in fence-sitting to his achievements by first demanding action against Sucha Singh Chhotepur and then siding with him.The party leaders pointed out, Khaira was first to sign the letter to the AAP high command demanding action against Chhotepur. “And the moment he realised that this was not liked by the Punjabis, he took a u-turn in his characteristic style and started defending Chhotepur,” they pointed out.
The Congress leaders said that it was not for the first time that Khaira had resorted to such fence-sitting and u-turns, saying, earlier when Capt Amarinder Singh was appointed the PCC president he was all praise for him. They pointed out how Khaira went on saying that only Capt Amarinder can take Punjab out of its ills and set the ruling SAD-BJP government right.
“And within a few months when he joined the AAP, he started criticising and finding faults with Capt Amarinder,” they pointed out, while referring to the inconsistency in his stand and character and predicting that he was likely to take many more u-turns within the AAP depending on what turn the events take there.Referring to his contradicting facts about Ford Foundation donations to Arvind Kejriwal’s NGO, Parivartan, the Congress leaders suggested to him not to be more loyal than the king as everything was on record. “Ford Foundation donations to Parivartan are a universally accepted fact and even if Kejriwal himself wishes to deny these, he cannot,” they told Khaira, while advising him not to try to defend the indefensible and make a complete fool of himself.
Never threw my weight behind Chottepur: Khaira
Jalandhar: A day after his press conference, AAP Punjab spokesperson Sukhpal Singh Khaira on Monday said that a section of media misinterpreted his remarks on AAP Punjab convener Sucha Singh Chottepur’s expulsion episode from the party. Khaira said that he never threw his weight behind removing Chottepur. “My verbal comments were misinterpreted and misconstrued in respect to Chottepur’s removal as state convener. I stand by the words ‘unfortunate’ and ‘sad’ used to explain the removal of Chottepur. But, that did not mean that I was throwing my weight behind him politically, the way it was reported in a section of the media today,” he said. The AAP leader said that he reiterated that he stands by the collective decision of the party on the Chottepur episode.
