Langah clip, groupism among party leaders led to Gurdaspur defeat: SAD
Badal(Rajay Deep) – The Shiromani Akali Dal on Friday held a post-mortem analysis of the Gurdaspur bypoll defeat during the core committee meeting held here at the party president Sukhbir Singh Badal’s residence. Some of the senior leaders blamed the party’s former core committee member and former minister Sucha Singh Langah’s objectionable video clip as the major reason behind the loss. Finding consensus on the issue, two members of the core committee also urged the party chief to introduce some better mechanism for keeping a check and balance over the party leaders assigned with key responsibilities, stating that one’s misdeed put all in shame and severe loss.Sources in the SAD’s core committee also divulged that factionalism among the party workers and leaders of local level in Gurdaspur region was also discussed in the meeting. Reacting to the same, the party president ensured to set the things in place. Further, some members hailing from Majha region pointed out the prevalence of Congress terrorism in the constituency, claiming that whole of the state machinery was blatantly pressed on service to ensure the Congress candidate’s victory. The Shiromani Akali Dal also discussed the party’s centenary function, to be held in 2020, at grand scale. The core committee members also resolved to leave no stone unturned to make party’s resurgence in 2017 Lok Sabha elections. While congratulating the Punjabi-origin Canadian leader Jagmeet Singh for being elected as the new leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP), the SAD’s core committee also discussed the strategy to make the copies of holy book Guru Granth Sahib available overseas. One section proposed the establishment of a printing press over there while another one floated a scheme of designated air transport mechanism for the same.Further, they all rejected the notification on farmer debt, saying the Congress government had reneged on its commitment to implement a Rs 90,000 debt waiver even as it expressed grave concern at the imposition of new taxes on the common man. The SAD’s core committee, during the meeting presided over by former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, said the refusal of the Congress government to implement a complete loan waiver would deepen the farm crisis in Punjab. It expressed deep concern at the sharp rise in farm suicides as well as the government’s failure to give relief to the farming community. The meeting also condemned the government for hitting out at the common man by introducing a municipal tax equivalent to two per cent of power bills in municipal areas besides increase in external development charges and other services provided by the municipalities. The committee noted that these new taxes were against the spirit of GST and demanded their immediate rollback. It also asked the government to immediately lower VAT on petrol and diesel saying most States had already reduced VAT on petroleum. The core committee took serious note of the State government’s decision to close down 800 schools, saying no government could adopt such a mercenary attitude towards the education sector. The committee also asked the Punjab government to immediately waive its share in GST on purchase of items used for ‘Karah parsad’ at Sri Darbar Sahab. They also asked the Congress government to immediately withdraw the license fee imposed on tractors being used for haulage.
