The main heritage structures that have been neglected are ‘Kos Minars’ or ‘Mile Pillars’, were erected by the Mughal rulers on the main highways across the empire to delineate the route and mark the distance. They played a significant role in the system of governance during the Mughal period. But over years these significant road monuments have gone into state of disrepair and are almost lost in obscurity.‘Kos-Minars’ were built during the reign of Jahangir on road to Lahore from the Delhi. Though, these milestones were built during Jahangir’s rule, the route existed even during the Ashokan period. While in the present age, milestones are put after every kilometer, the ‘minars’ were built after every 4.17 kilometers. These ‘minars’ are found when one travels from Ludhiana to Phillaur to Noormahal to Nakodar.
The Kos Minars can be seen around the city in Ghungrali Rajputan, Lashkri Khan, Dhandari Kalan, Sherpur and Sanhewal. These ‘minars’, which should have been preserved, have all but disappeared from the scene. The number of them now falls in the residential areas of above mentioned places, which shows its poor state of affairs.
There is no one appointed from tourism department of Punjab Government to take care of the above mentioned ‘Kos Minars’ or ‘Mile pillars ‘. The congress grass can be seen grown It shows the total failure of tourism department in Punjab. The stray animals sit around them and people use the area around the place for throwing dump at various places. The structures have almost outlived their lives and no one really cares to check the structures in order to renovate them. Most of the people where these ‘Kos Minars’ or ‘Mile Pillars’ are situated don’t even know about its historical importance. They just treat them as the normal Pillars there. The information boards have also not been placed at the Minars so that people could know about its importance. Where at one two places it has been placed those were written in English which maximum localities not able to understand as they are well versed with Punjabi.Despite the direction of Punjab government to place all information boards in Punjabi also with the English. But the tourism department seems to put deaf ear towards all issues and Punjab Government is least bothered towards marinating the heritage sites of Ludhiana, which are neglected and have lost their glory with passing tim.
