Chandigarh: While AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal continues to maintain an ominous silence 48 hours after the verdict, the party’s flop dharna at Kapoori village has exposed its lack of credibility on the SYL issue, Punjab Congress president Captain Amarinder Singh said on Saturday, adding that Kejriwal seemed to have suddenly lost his voice.
The unusually prolonged silence of Arvind Kejriwal on this sensitive issue, which is close to every Punjab citizen’s heart, has negated any impact the party might have hoped to secure from its dharna, Captain Amarinder said, challenging Kejriwal, once again, to clarify his stand on SYL.
Forty-eight hours after Punjab was thrown into turmoil by the earth-shattering judgement of the apex court, Kejriwal has not uttered a single word in support of the state, Captain Amarinder pointed out, asking the AAP leader what this silence on his part meant. “Does it mean you are not supporting Punjab’s stand on the issue,” asked the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief.
Demanding once again for Kejriwal to tell clearly whether he was with Punjab or with Haryana and Delhi in the SYL case, Captain Amarinder asked, “Will you, or will you not, allow Punjab’s water to go to Haryana and Delhi.”
“You have been doing a flip flop on the issue for the past several months, clearly indicating your duplicity in the matter,” said the PPCC chief, adding that the time for playing games with the sentiments of the people of Punjab was over. “They want an answer, which you can no longer avoid giving,” he added.
Kejriwal’s persistent refusal to clarify his stand on the issue has completely and irrevocably exposed his lack of concern for the interests of the people of Punjab, which was clearly reflected in the pathetic response to the AAP dharna at Kapoori, said PPCC leaders Hardyal Kamboj, Preneet Kaur and Laal Singh.
It is evident from media reports that the Kapoor dharna, announced by AAP as a mark of protest against the Supreme Court verdict on SYL, turned out to be a big flop show. Some reports indicate that less than 500 people reportedly turned up for what was touted by AAP as its sign of solidarity with the people of Punjab on SYL.
The PPCC leaders said the people of this state had unambiguously rejected AAP’s frustrated attempts to retrieve some of the ground on SYL, lost as a result of Kejriwal’s deliberate quietude in the matter.
Not only the Congress but other parties and organisations in Punjab have also been demanding clarity by Kejriwal on his SYL stand, the Congress leaders pointed out, adding that their efforts had so far been rendered futile as the AAP national convenor seemed to have completely lost his voice since the SC verdict.
