Jakhar beats BJP, AAP in Gurdaspur by-poll.
Congress candidate from Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat Sunil Jakhar won the elections by 1,93,219 votes by beating its rival BJP candidate Swarn Salaria. Jakhar got 499752 votes. BJP candidate got 3,06,533 while AAP candidate Suresh Khajuria was polled only 23579 votes.
Jakhar, who is the Punjab Congress president, was leading since the first round of counting.It is also believed that Congress candidate had the benefit after the video of Sucha Singh Langah that had gone viral after which he was expelled from Shiromani Akali Dal. People apparently also voted against demonetization and rising fuel prices by BJP led central government.

The counting was being held in centres in Gurdaspur and Pathankot towns. Nearly 56 per cent of the 15.22 lakh was registered voters exercised their franchise for the seat. The voter turnout was much lower than the over 70 per cent polling in the 2014 general elections.
The seat fell vacant in April following the passing away of veteran actor Vinod Khanna, a four-time MP from the seat.The Bharatiya Janata Party is trying to retain the seat while the Congress, which recently came to power in Punjab after sweeping the assembly polls, is trying to wrest it from the BJP.For six assembly constituencies of Gurdaspur district, counting center was set up at Sukhjindra College Gurdaspur and for three assembly constituencies of Pathankot district, counting centre was set up at the SD College in Pathankot.
The Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat had nine Assembly segments — Bhoa, Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Dinanagar, Qadian, Fathegarh Churian, Dera Baba Nanak, Sujanpur and Batala.
