Gurdaspur, October 15:-Though the Indian National Congress party has won the Gurdaspur Parliament by election with a huge margin of 1,93,223 votes but the congress Hindu candidate has retained seat after a big gap of 46 years when Parbodh Chander (father of former Union Minister of Law Ashwani Kumar) who defeated Mohan Lal Jansangh with a margin of 93,647 votes in 1971.The Congress Candidate and PPCC Chief Sunil Jakhar got a total of 4,99,751 votes, BJP candidate Swaran Salaria has got 3,06,528 and AAP Candidate Major General (Retd) Sures Khajuria got 23,579 votes. Major Khajuria lost even his security in the election. The remaining 8 candidates also forfeited their security also.Even 7587 votes pressed button of NOTA during the polling which means these people have proffered to use NOTA than choosing remaining 8 candidates which were in the fray because none of these 8 candidate touch the figure of NOTA prefers. It was worth mentioning that the Gurdaspur Parliament constituency went vacant after death of film star turn politician Vinod Khanna who died on April 27,2017.The Gurdaspur parliament constituency has nine assembly segment which including Pathankot, Sujanpur and Bhoa Reserve in Pathankot district and Dina Nagar Reserve, Gurdaspur, Dera Baba Nanak, Fatehgarh Churian Batala and Qadian assembly constituencies in Gurdasour district.
The Sunil Jakhar has got maximum lead from Dera Baba Nanak assembly constituency where from Jakhar got lead of 44,074 votes and minimum lead of 6701 votes from Sujanpur assembly constituency. Major Khajuria got maximum 4027 votes from Dera Baba Nanak constituency. Out of the 7 postal ballot papers votes, Swaran Salaria of BJP got 5 votes and Jakhar and Independent Pardeep Kumar got one each votes respectively.The counting process was completed in all 15 phases as the counting of nine assembly segment which including Pathankot, Sujanpur and Bhoa Reserve in Pathankot district was held in S D College Pathankot while assembly constituencies of Dina Nagar Reserve, Gurdaspur, Dera Baba Nanak, Fatehgarh Churian Batala and Qadian assembly constituencies in Gurdasour district was held in Sukhjindra Institute Gurdaspur.
The district electoral officer and deputy commissioner Gurlovleen Singh Sidhu presented victory certificate to Sunil Jakhar.
