A senior Akali leader and loyalist of Badal family, Sikander Singh Maluka, a Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) candidate, will have to prove his competency in a triangular contest from Rampura Phull in the 2017 Punjab Vidhan Sabha election.
A sitting Minister for Rural Development and Panchayats, Maluka is matriculate and earlier was holding portfolio of Education Minister.
This time apart from this old rival and Congress candidate Gurpreet Singh Kangar, Makula has to face Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Manjit Singh Sidhu from the same constituency.
He was elected to the Punjab Legislative Assembly in 1997 on SAD ticket from this constituency for first time. He lost the next two elections from Rampura in 2002 and 2007. Maluka was re-elected from Rampura in 2012.
After 2012 elections, he was made Minister for Education and Higher Education and Languages.
Maluka had always been in controversies, Recentely he had landed in in trouble over ‘Hindu ardas’ and was panalised by Akal Takht (highest seat of Sikhs).
He is also the president of Punjab Kabaddi Association and Chairman All India Circle Style Kabaddi, Vice President Punjab Olympic Association, Chairman, District Planning Committee Bathinda, Member core Committee and Political Affairs Committee of Shromani Akali Dal.
On November 20, 2015, Maluka was assaulted by an elderly farmer in Hamirgarh village in Bathinda district but he was able to escape without any visible injury. The constituency has total 1,45,535 voters who will decide his future in the Punjab assembly polls.
