Ludhiana(DP Correspondent) – The court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Suresh Kumar Goyal on Monday acquitted Jagtar Singh Hawara, one of the key conspirators in the assassination of former chief minister of Punjab, Beant Singh, in the case of recovery of the weapon AK 56. Earlier trial court of Judicial Magistrate Ist Class Varinder Kumar has convicted Hawara in same case. The court of CJM keeps aside the order of trial court and acquitted Jagtar Singh Hawara.On April 09, 2018, the trial court of Judicial Magistrate Varinder Kumar has convicted him and referred the case to the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Suresh Kumar Goyal for quantum of conviction as the trial court of Judicial Magistrate has power to order for conviction only upto 3 years.
On Monday, Hawara appeared in court through video conferencing from Tihar jail. The defence counsel Jaspal Singh Manjhpur has claimed during arguments that Hawara was falsely implicated in case. On December 6, 1995, an FIR was registered at police station after recovering of weapon AK 56 from clock tower area. In addition to this, Hawara was included in bomb blast case, that was blast on the same day December 6, 1995 at clock tower chowk. According to the prosecution, he has admitted the above mentioned facts during investigation. After the detailed trial of witnesses, evidence and arguments of the both sides, trial court found him guilty and convicted accordingly. For quantum of conviction, the trial court of Judicial Magistrate, Varinder Kumar has referred the said case to court of Chief Judicial Magistrate as the trial court of Judicial Magistrate can’t convict the accused more than 3 years. The court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Suresh Kumar Goyal has heard the arguments of defence counsel Jaspal Singh Manjhpur and has acquitted the Hawara in the above mentioned case.
