Mounting pressure from Sikh organisations in Punjab forced the Congress to thwart its plans to install former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s statue in Ludhiana.Congress high command that was wary of the issue on Monday directed the district authorities, who were adamant on installing the statue at Congress Bhawan in Ludhiana, for not going ahead with the ceremony. Even the district police was on its toes over the controversial ceremony that was to be performed on the death anniversary of Indira Gandhi who was assassinated by her own guards after army attacked Sikh holy site- Golden Temple at Amritsar to flush out armed militants.There were several rounds of meetings of district Congress leaders with the local police authorities after a Congress leader Vijay Agnihotri announced that the statue of Indira Gandhi would be installed in Congress office in Ludhiana. Sources in party informed that the chief minister’s office was also informed about the installation ceremony that initially gave a go ahead but pulled its hands on Monday morning. A group of Congress leaders also held meeting with the police commissioner of Ludhiana RN Dhoke where the police expressed fears of going ahead with the ceremony.District president of Ludhiana Congress, Gurpreet Gogi said that installation of statue of former prime minister was not an official decision but a party worker wanted to install it on his own. “Party high command was not aware of any such event” said Gogi.Shiromani Akali Dal had also asked Congress not to go ahead with the ceremony. On the other hand some Sikh organisations also held protest demonstrations against the ceremony.
The statue of Indira Gandhi was ordered from Jaipur in Rajasthan that would have arrived Ludhiana on Monday afternoon.
Vijay Agnihotri said, “The whole nation remembers Indira Gandhi as an Iron lady. She has worked immensely for the poor, farmers and downtrodden. There are various reasons that she continues to live in the memories of millions even 33 years after her demise”.
