LUDHIANA: The Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) is flooded with queries regarding the food processing units owing to the increasing pressure on local poultry farms that are now shifting to processing of eggs and other products. Several new poultry farms have come up in neighboring states including Haryana, Uttar Pradesh among others that have decreased the viability of poultry farms of Punjab. GADVASU that is one of the biggest veterinary varsity of the region and also involved in new innovations has come to the rescue of such poultry farm owners.Turning of egg into cheese is the technology that the poultry farm owners are adopting from the scientists of GADVASU. The cheese is not only healthier that the normal cheese but is also cheap in price. The minimum cost to set up an egg processing unit costs Rs 5000 while a full-fledged unit with packaging facility costs anywhere between Rs 1 lakh to Rs 3 lakh. Dr Manish K Chaitli from department of livestock product technology at the varsity said that experts were providing the hands on experience and technology to those seeking to process eggs from their poultry farms. He said that the local industry was in distress due to the increasing poultry farms in the neighboring states of Punjab.Chaitli said that during the past one year, queries related to processing of eggs has increased manifold. “We are training these poultry farm owners and they are in turn converting their eggs into high protein cheese” said Chaitli. Most of the poultry farms are located in Sangrur, Mohali and Patiala district. One kilogram of cheese could be produced at only Rs 150 that is lesser than the cheese produced from traditional ways. There is also no need of milk in producing cheese from egg. Vice Chancellor of GADVASU, AS Nanda, said that the varsity said that the experts of the varsity were making efforts to bring in best technology in the food processing business of the region.
