Mohali police illegal mining: The Punjab and Haryana high court on Friday issued a notice to Punjab Government and others on a petition of a Mohali resident alleging illegal mining near his house. Those who have been asked to file reply include Punjab government’s industries and commerce department, general manager-cum-mining officer, Mohali, deputy commissioner (DC) and senior superintendent of police (SSP) and eight five persons.A division bench comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice Sudhir Mittal issued the notices after hearing the petition filed by Jagjit Singh, 45, a resident of Salempur Khurd village, Kharar tehsil, Mohali district. The petitioner alleged village Sarpanch Avtar Singh along with other carrying out illegal mining in Salempur Khurd and Saini Majra villages falling under Salempur Khurd gram panchayat in around 100 acres of land.According to the petitioner, they are excavating minerals, including sand, clay, earth and gravel, without any permission from the authorities, and in violation of provisions of Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957 and Punjab Minor Mineral Rules, 2013.The petitioner had sought direction to stop the illegal mining, which, he said, is being done on a large scale in collusion and connivance with the authorities and specifically with general manager-cum-mining officer, Mohali. Further direction have also been sought to seize the materials, minerals and impound the tools, carrier, excavation of equipment, vehicles and to recover the price of the minerals excavated by them.The petitioner has also sought filling up the pits and leveling the land in his neighbourhood, which has been dug up/excavated up to 15ft to 20 ft deep at a distance of around 10 metre from his house and to restore the land to its original position. The matter would now come up for hearing on February 21.
