More than fifty research papers were presented during the International conference on “Immigrant Literature “ at Gujranwala Guru Nanak Khalsa College.An International Conference on Immigrant Literature by the writers of Punjabi Origin was organised in Gujranwala Guru Nanak Khalsa College on January 16-17, 2018 under the patronage of Khalsa Education Council, Parvasi Sahit AdhyanKendra and Punjab Bhawan, Surrey, Canada. Besides having more than hundred papers in Punjabi language itself, around fifty papers were presented in English. Papers were writtenaround themes explored by diaspora writers and these included the cross-cultural experience of Punjabi Immigrant’s families, racial discrimination, assimilation and exclusion, the experience of women in the diaspora and spirituality in the modern world. Dr. Tejinder Kaur, former Director, Centre for Diaspora Studies, Punjabi University , Patiala, presided over the first session and Dr. Vipan Kumar from Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was the Guest of Honour. Scholars from Jodhpur, Jammu, Anandpur Sahib, Dabwali, Lucknow, Amritsar, Hisar, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Patiala, participated and presented the papers on various Immigrant authors of Punjabi Origin. The uniqueness of the conference was that, to understand the Punjabi literature, papers were presented in English.Prof. Sushminderjit Kaur , coordinator of conference said that the purpose of the conference was to introduce the ‘Parwasis’ who live abroad and can’t understand Punjabi, can be acquainted with Punjabi literature through English. Dr. Jaspreet Mander, Chairperson, Deptt. of English, Punjabi University, Patiala, Presided over the second session and dwelt upon the various facets of Immigrant Literature. Dr. Kiran Arora, Principal, PCM SD College for Women, Jalandhar presided over the third session and reflected upon the identity crisis and the subjugated selves being borne by the immigrants. Principal Dr. Arvinder Singh, while presenting mementos to the dignitaries said that such type of conferences are really motivating and promised that these would be organised in the future also. Dr. L.S. Bedi proposed a vote of thanks. Present on the occasion were S. Gursharan SinfghNarula, President, Khalsa Educational Council, Dr. S.P. Singh, Former Vice- Chancellor and Hony, Gen Secy, KhalsaEducational Council, and other members of the management.
