Amritsar: The solid waste management company, engaged by Amritsar’s Municipal Corporation (MC) to collect garbage from the residential localities in the holy city, seems to have tied up the laces of its shoes for performing its assigned task. The employees of this company throng residential localities of different wards with their carriers and collect garbage from each and every house every morning. The service has been introduced in 52 wards of the holy city so far.
Thanks to the Golden Temple, Holy City of Amritsar gets a large number of tourists from across the world every year.
The company engaged by MC has pressed into service 215 Tata Ace carriers so far in 52 wards. The employees of this company start working in the wee hours. The service is being provided two times a day, one in the morning and then during post-lunch session. Sonali Giri, MC Commissioner, said that in lieu of this service every household is required to shell out a very small amount of money, which is to be collected by the company on monthly basis.
She also divulged that these ‘user charges’ being negligible amount, is required to be paid by each and every family residing in the dwelling units of residential localities, irrespective of the fact whether that family makes use of this service or not. “All this has been done just to ensure that every family comes forward to utilise this service,” she said.
Giri further disclosed that the solid waste management project, which cost the state exchequer of Rs 109 crore, had been flagged off by Punjab’s Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on August 14 last year during a function in MC’s newly built building in Ranjit Avenue. Earlier, two big companies–Essel and Hitachy-through a joint venture, had signed an agreement with the MC March 14 last year.
