Mid day meal crisis: The Mid-day meal scheme ,run for the students in Punjab, is in deep crises due to financial clinch. Since last three month, not even single penny is released for this purpose. The teachers of the school and at some places contractor have been spending money from their own pockets to continue the scheme. Even the employee, who has been appointed for the cooking of meals, has not given their revised dues for six months. Rs. 300 crore are spent on this scheme, annually. Now the bill of 52 crore of this scheme has been stuck in government treasury since the month of September.
This scheme is for the students of Government and government aided school till the 8th class. Due to the financial crises, the government has been paying funds delay by three month, since last eight months. Although the Central Government releases its three months share timely, but the state government often avoids releasing its share of 40 percent as matching amount.The state government releases grant for one month only, despite three months. When contacted to Director General of School Education Prashant Goyal, he told that the bills for Mid Day Meal has been stuck in the treasury and said that It is being tried that the bills has passed quickly .The salary of the employees, who prepare mid-day meals was increased from Rs. 1200 to 1700 per month , but the increased amount is also not giving to them from January to May of this year.
