Chandigarh: Giving a burial to the mining norms, a well connected mining mafia has been wrecking havoc with the ecology along the Beas river in Hajipur block of Hoshiarpur district for the past couple of years.
Ironically, the mafia is active in digging out natural minerals deep from fragile land of over dozens of villages located along the river on the interstate border. The alleged illegal mining is going on blatantly right under the nose of the authorities concerned for a long.
The villagers, who claimed to have made over 100 complaint to the deputy Commission, Senior Superintendent of Police and officials of the mining department against the illegal mining but no to avail.
Up in arms against the illegal activity that has virtually endangering the ecological balance, the villagers have formed different fronts including Khannan Roko, Zameen Bachao Sangharash Committee, Hajipur, to raise their voice against the mafia.
The villagers have oganised protests many times apart from blocking the Jalandhar-Jammu highway a couple of times but failed to attack the attention of the thick skinned government officials, claimed Dharminder Singh president of the Khannan Roko, Zameen Bachao Sangharash Committee.
He said that the official concerned have turned a deaf ears towards their plights due to political pressures and their vested interest for long. Following protest in which Dr Dharamvir Gandhi, Aam Aadmi Party MP from Patiala, had also joined the villagers in a protest, the government cancelled the No Objection Certificates of four stone crushing units but despite that the units never stopped their production, he alleged.
