Jalandhar: In damage control mode ahead of the ensuing assembly elections, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Monday managed to convince Jalandhar Cantonment MLA Pargat Singh to attend its SAD district (urban and rural) meeting, which was targeted at reaching out to masses through social media platform The SAD meeting was chaired by party spokesman Daljit Singh Cheema along with all the MLAs and their representatives, where all eyes remained on MLA Pargat’s presence during the meet. The meeting was aimed at mobilizing the workers in the SAD organisational structure. Notably, MLA Pargat Singh was missing in action on the SAD’s political turf for the past some time. The Jalandhar Cantonment MLA has stirred a hornet’s nest by revolting against his own SAD-BJP government over the coming up of Solid Waste Management project at Jamsher village in his constituency.
Earlier also, Pargat Singh missed the visit of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and a dharna staged by SAD in Jalandhar against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the recent past. Sources maintained SAD spokesman Daljit Singh Cheema met Pargat at his residence on Sunday evening, convincing him to take part in the meeting. It was learnt that Cheema convined MLA Pargat to attend the meeting, as the SAD leadership had to face huge embarrassment owing to his revolt against the government.
MLA Pargat Singh said that he attended the meeting being part of the SAD-BJP government. “As far as my grievances over the solid waste management project at Jamsher were concerned, I am still sticking to my old stand. Naturally, my commitment to the people of my constituency would remain the same. However, today the meeting was confined to utilizing social media for maximum reach”, he said.
SAD District Urban President Gurcharan Singh Channi said that instructions were passed to mobilise the Scheduled Castes (SC), Backward Castes (BC), Youth wing, and the women wing of the SAD. “The party MLAs and the workers were directed to complete the worker’s list and spread SAD achievements through social media like Facebook, Twitter and Whats App”, he said. Notably, those who did not attend the meeting included Kartarpur MLA Sarwan Singh Phillaur and Nakodar MLA Gurpartap Singh Wadala. While Phillaur sent his son, Wadala sent his representative in the meeting. Among those who attended the meeting included Chief Parliamentary Secretary Pawan Kumar Tinu, Avinash Chander, Transport Minister Ajit Singh Kohar and MLA Pargat Singh besides the SAD urban and rural leadership.
